Kanazawa Shimizu Springs / Matsukawa Waterway

Kanazawa Shimizu Springs

Kanazawa Shimizu Spring Group

Selected by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment as one of the country’s top 100 water landmarks, Kanazawa Shimizu is a collection of seven springs located in Hachimantai City’s Matsuo-Yoriki area.

Kanazawa Shimizu Spring Group

The most active among them pumps around 20 tons of water per minute to the Iwate Fisheries Technology Center basin. You can see the power of Mt. Iwate and Hachimantai’s great outdoors yourself in the geyser of water constantly bursting forth from the spring! You can have a leisurely stroll up to the fountainhead. *You need to get a permission from the center for that.

Matsukawa Waterway

Matsukawa Springwater Canal

The Matsukawa Waterway is a “staircase” of water running against a scenic backdrop. Hachimantai’s Matsukawa River runs very cold even after thawing from winter; the Waterway was made to make its waters more suitable for use in irrigation. 20 meters in width, 0.45 meters in water depth, and spanning 1,300 meters in length, it works by exposing the water fully to the sun’s light and warmer air to gradually increase the water temperature. It has 35 “steps,” and the natural light reflects beautifully off the water’s surface.
