Hachimantai Onsenkyo Area Course

Hachimantai Aspite Line

A mountain road spanning 27 kilometers from Hachimantai City’s Gozaisho district all the way to Tokoro Onsen in Akita Prefecture, all within the Towada-Hachimantai National Park region.

The Aspite Line lets you drive right over Mt. Hachimantai, while enjoying seamless views all around of the nearby peaks, ridges, and alpine highlands. Be it the deep emeralds of summer or the rich reds of autumn, you’ll be treated to beautiful “Aspite scenery” no matter when you go. From the prefectural border near Mikaeri Ridge, you can stop off to take in breathtaking panoramas of Mt. Iwate, or take a short hike around Mt. Hachimantai’s summit to check out Kagami-numa Pond (the Hachimantai Dragon Eye,) Hachiman-numa Pond, and the Kuroyachi Wetlands.
When the road opens in spring, it’s flanked by sheer walls of snow that measure up to 7-8 meters! This “snow corridor” is the longest of its kind in Japan, and attracts visitors each year just to see it.

Closed for winter from early November to mid-April. For details, see the Hachimantai Tourism Association website.→HERE

Hachimantai Jukai Line

A 17 kilometer road connecting Mt. Hachimantai’s summit and Matsukawa Onsen takes you away from civilization and deep into the forest, where trees all around you sway gently in the wind.

Gouts of steam rising from the surface mark the location of Toshichi Onsen, the highest-altitude hot spring in Tohoku, hidden amongst the peaks and stone ridges. Sightseeing spots set up along the Jukai Line’s length allow travelers to stop off and enjoy breathtaking view of Mt. Iwate, Mt. Mokkodake, and Mt. Akakuradake. And at its endpoint near Matsukawa Onsen, the quiet sounds of running brooks and streams through the nearby gorge.

Mt. Iwate Panorama Line

The Iwate Panorama Line is a 9 kilometer road connecting the Yakehashiri Lava Flow and Hachimantai Onsenkyo areas, also known as the municipal Mt. Iwate Route 1.
The road certainly earns its name; getting onto it from the Nishine IC, you’ll be treated along the way to broad, panoramic scenery of Mt. Iwate, Mt. Chausu, Appi Kogen, Mt. Nanashigure, and Mt. Himekami. Even better, you won’t encounter a single traffic light.
But it’s not just car window scenery! There are multiple spots along the way that are worth stopping at for a stroll, including the Yakehashiri International Village and Iwate Prefectural Citizens’ Forest. And if you need a place to grab a quick lunch or rest, places like Salad Farm Village and Yakehashiri-no-Yu have you covered.
The road’s relative lack of inclines and slopes also makes it a good option for cyclists, as well!
*Parts of the road area are closed during the winter.→HERE
See the website of Yakehashiri International Village for details and confirmation before setting out.
