Situated 900 meters above sea level, Matsuo Mine was once the #1 sulfur mine in the East. At its height, it flourished with over 15,000 people, but eventually sulfur became more popular to harvest as a byproduct of oil, rather than a mining product. Thus, the mine declined in activity until it finally closed its doors in 1969.
Now, you can visit the Archive Museum to learn all about the mine. There are historical documents and pictures on display, as well as model and diorama exhibits. Explore what was it like to live and work in this “paradise above the clouds!”
